Thirsty for Knowledge: Essential Tips for Watering Your Plants
Watering plants is one of the most important tasks for maintaining healthy, thriving plants.
However, it’s not as simple as just pouring water on your plants whenever you remember—but it’s also not too complicated. As long as you understand a few key guidelines, this task becomes simpler and even enjoyable—especially when you see how your plants respond!
In this post, we’ll cover the types of water you can use, when to water, how to water, how much water to use, and when to add fertilizer. So, grab a glass of water, and let’s get started! (:
Types of Water to Use:
The best water for plants is rainwater, of course. Rainwater is pure, clean, and fresh, making your plants feel right at home. Here in Barcelona, we don’t get too many rainy days, but when they do come, we recommend putting out a bowl, bucket, or any container to collect some of that precious water.
Mineral water is also great for plants, but it can be expensive. If you have more than one plant, the cost can add up.
Tap water is the most common type used for watering plants. However, be mindful that some tap water (especially in Barcelona) may contain chemicals like chlorine and fluoride, which can be harmful to certain plants. To reduce these chemicals, let the water sit for 24 hours before using it.
Filtered water is another good option! Although it may still contain some calcium and other chemicals, it has fewer than tap water, and your plants will thank you.
When to Water:
The best time to water your plants is in the morning. Plants use sunlight to perform photosynthesis, so watering them early helps them grow at their best. Temperature also matters. For outdoor plants, avoid watering during the hottest part of the day, as water evaporates quickly. There’s also a risk of burn marks on the leaves if water droplets are exposed to direct sunlight.
How to Water:
Water the soil, not the plant itself. Avoid getting water on the leaves, as this can lead to fungal growth. Slowly pour water at the base of the plant until all the soil is moistened. Make sure to cover the entire surface of the soil, not just one spot.
How Much Water to Use:
The amount of water varies depending on the type and size of the plant. A good rule of thumb is to water until the soil feels moist to the touch, but not soaking wet. You can test this by sticking your finger deep into the soil; if it feels dry, it’s time to water.
When to Add Fertilizer:
Plants need nutrients to grow, and fertilizer provides these essentials. It’s best to fertilize during the growing season, typically in spring and summer. Follow the instructions on the fertilizer package for the recommended amount and frequency. Want more tips on fertilizing your plants? Read this article for our top tips!
